Any of these conditions would require immediate emergency care. Bring your pet in as soon as possible if they are experiencing:

  • Critical bleeding
  • Ingestion of a poisonous substance
  • Broken bones, lameness or inability to move leg(s)
  • Unconsciousness
  • Urine in the blood
  • Choking, difficulty breathing or sustained coughing or gagging
  • Signs of obvious pain or extreme anxiety
  • Seizures or staggering
  • Inability or difficulty urinating or passing feces
  • Injuries to the eye(s)
  • Heat stress or heatstroke
  • More than 2 episodes of vomiting or diarrhea in 24 hours

What should you do if your pet needs emergency attention?

Veterinary emergencies listed on this page and most others require immediate veterinary care.

Cautiously approach your pet. Dogs will sometimes respond to an owner calling their name. Using first aid methods, stabilize your pet for safe transportation as much as possible by creating a makeshift stretcher (for dogs). Cats can be placed in an open-topped box or carrier.

Carefully place your pet on the stretcher or inside the box. Once you feel confident and safe to transport them, bring him or her to an emergency care facility immediately.

Call the clinic (or have a friend or family member do this for you) so the staff will know to expect you and your pet.

If your pet is having an emergency or needs urgent care during our regular hours, call us immediately or bring your pet to our hospital as soon as possible. Early intervention can reduce recovery time, and could even save a life.

We do our best to work in as many urgent/emergent patients as we can; however, if there are already several patients triaged before you, we may recommend you go to Carolina Veterinary Specialist depending on the extent/degree of injury.

Wait Times

Similar to an emergency room in a hospital for people, a veterinary emergency hospital may be unpredictable at times, which can mean needing to wait.

Unfortunately, we are unable to predict which types of cases will come through the doors or when they will arrive, but we do prioritize and triage each case based on the animal's medical needs.

At Friendly Animal Clinic, we care for your animal just like we would care for our own. Pet owners can wait in our comfortable waiting area, and we will always do our best to keep you up to date regarding length of wait times and your pet's status.

Veterinary Emergency Services

Our team at Friendly Animal Clinic works closely with our After Hours Emergency partners to address almost any pet emergency. At our emergency clinic, we offer advanced diagnostics and emergency care for your four-legged friends.

We understand that when your pet is sick, every minute counts. We are prepared to provide a range of diagnostic tests and same-day results.

Our in-house laboratory and on-site pharmacy mean you have convenient, efficient access to test results and any medication your pet may need. We also provide internal medicine and medical boarding services.

Cost for an Emergency Visit

Just as each pet is unique, each emergency is different and will require different medical care, medications, approaches to treatment and more.

Costs will vary depending on the emergency, but we will always explain each condition and treatment options, and can provide advice regarding options that may be within your budget.

It's always best to be prepared for unexpected medical bills that could come up, so we recommend keeping a separate emergency savings fund for pets. You may also want to consider pet insurance as early in your pet's life as possible.
